This review is from: The Online Student’s User Manual: Everything You Need To Know To Be A Successful Online College Student (Paperback)

I just completed The Online Student’s User Manual and I give it a thumbs up! I have always been a traditional student in a classroom setting, but after reading this book I really feel learning in an online environment is the best fit for me. I either want to begin a class online or earn another degree online. I was pleased to read about all the available resources and information contained in this book. There are many aspects of a online environment that you may or may not have been aware of, but after reading this book you know all your bases have been covered. It is a great resource to refer back to as well and one I would recommend to family, friends and colleagues. I would highly recommend parents read this as well, it provides excellent resources regarding scholarships, financial aid and information about accredited colleges. Check out all the valuable websites for additional information. In my opinion it is a must read! Mary Ann B.

Armed with the proper knowledge, you will be able to succeed online or improve your learning skills whether you take one class or a get an entire college degree online.

Where Can You Find a List Of Online Colleges for Your State?

Finding a List of Online Colleges

Google is a wonderful search engine.  I’m not sure how anyone lived without it.  To find a list of online colleges for your state, you will want to do a search on Google.   Here are the initial steps:

1.  Determine what type of online college you are searching for.  For example:  culinary arts online colleges, business online colleges, fashion design online colleges, online colleges for teachers, online colleges for mba students, etc.

2.  Go to Google and type in your “keywords”.  What are key words?  Exactly what the words say.  In this case, your keywords would be “online colleges in Pennsylvania” or “online colleges in PA”.  Use the name of the state you are interested in.  You can even get more specific.  “online colleges in Pittsburgh PA”;  “online culinary arts colleges in Pittsburgh PA”, “online business colleges Pittsburgh PA”, etc.

3.  You will get a list of online colleges available in your area.  You will notice that the online colleges are located all over the USA.  Most of the time, even when you type in specific locations, you will get online colleges that serve students nationwide.  Does that matter?

The only time choosing a nationwide online college will matter is if you need to take physical classes in conjunction with your online classes.  For example, if you choose the field of culinary arts, you can’t bake a cake online (at least not yet), so you will want to consider choosing a career college or community college in your area where you can supplement your hands on brick and mortar learning with online courses.

4.  How do you know what the best online college is for you?  Once again, Google becomes a factor.  Make a short list of online colleges that seem to appeal to you and do some research.  Go to google and read more about the colleges you find.  Look up their websites to see if you can find testimonials from existing students.  Better yet, go online and type in the name of the college and the word “scam” after it.  See if anything bad comes up.  While you are doing that though, make sure that you understand that there are people who think everything is a scam.  Check out both sides of the story before making a decision.

Next time. . . what do you do with the information you have gathered on the online colleges?

Benefits and Disadvantages of Online Colleges

Online Colleges – Benefits and Disadvantages

We have come a long way with what is now available on the internet.  Actually, it’s really remarkable, especially in the field of education.  Twenty years ago, the only way to take College and graduate level classes was on the path to traditional  (i.e. making a physical trip to a school or residing there until you complete your degree).  Now, the classes are readily available to you at the click of a mouse, at your convenience.  You can now get a two or four year college degree entirely online!

How do you know if an online college is best for you?  This is not a simple question because there are many factors involved.  Perhaps these questions will help you get some idea if getting a degree online is right for you.

How’s Your Daily Schedule?

The rigors of everyday life are stressful enough without having to commute to school.  This is especially true if you are working full-time, have many outside obligations or have children.  There never seems to be enough time in the day to accomplish what it is you want to do, let alone take on another task of commuting to college.

The advantage of attending an online college from home is that most students can incorporate a class or two into their busy schedule and get their college degrees gradually overtime.  Even if you decide to attend full time, your schedule will be less complicated because everything you will need to do can be done through online learning.  There are some exceptions depending on the types of classes or coursework that you choose.  Some do require a combination of attending physical classes as well as online classes.  You will need to determine what is the best combination for you before you register for any online classes.

Are You Too Old to Attend College Online?

People who are older will be pleased with the fact that they do not have to sit in a classroom with many younger students who may frown upon the “older student” attending.  Actually, the opposite should be true as it is quite honorable to have an older student learn a new profession and not be afraid to attend class regardless of age.  There are numerous reports on google of individuals even in there late 60s and 70s returning to college to complete new degrees.

Regardless, getting a college degree online means that one never has to worry about appearances.  Work in your pajamas, underwear, casual clothing or even dress up if it makes you feel more professional.  The options are many as opposed to having to be in public.  No one will know your age and thus, it’s equal opportunity for everyone.

Distance to Travel to Get to College

Sometimes brick and mortar colleges are just too far away from where you live.  The online career college is available to you if you have a computer and an internet connection.  You will need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of traveling to and from college in all types of weather and in conforming to the hours that the classes will be available to you.  No more worries about the commute when you attend college online.

Costs

You will need to compare the overall costs of a brick and mortar college vs attending a college online.  If the college is too far away from where you live, you will need to get housing either on or off campus.  This can be very expensive.  If you are commuting, you will need to take the cost of parking into consideration, wear and tear on your vehicle, commuter delays, time to commute, as well as eating out if you have a full day of classes.  All of these things can add up.

When taking classes online, you will need to determine the cost of the credits offered.  You won’t have any traveling expenses or lodging expenses, so even if the credit cost is higher, it may still be less overall when you take other costs into consideration.

Is the Degree You Are Seeking Available Online?

Before you decide which type of college is best for you, make sure the degree you are seeking is available online.  Not all college degrees can be accommodated through online education, but many can, especially for those who are seeking advanced degrees.

Perhaps you can take the first two years of college online when getting basic courses.  Just make sure that the four year college you are going to attend will accept the credits that you are taking.  You will want to be able to transfer all of your credits or you will be wasting your money.

Getting a College Degree Online is a Piece of Cake

No, it is actually harder in many ways.  You need to be very independent and focused to succeed in getting an online college degree.  The courses are sometimes harder than when you attend a brick and mortar college.  There is only you and the teacher.  In a classroom, you can interact with other students and immediately bounce ideas around.  You are hearing the words coming from the teacher as well as reading and writing them.  Online colleges require a great deal more communication skills than attending a brick and mortar college.  If you are able to stay focused then online career colleges will be a great way to get your degree.
